Client:
Volvo Construction Equipment
Year:

Overview
The Volvo co-pilot is an interactive touch display that aids the operators during work with their machines ( used in excavators, wheel loaders, haulers, pavers etc). The system has multiple safety and operational related features and functionalities that aid the operators in their daily work activities. The 10" screen provides with various assist apps tailored to each machine used by the operators: Dig assist, Load assist, Haul assist, Pave assist & compact assist.
Stating The Problem
Operators are constantly challenged with multiple safety critical tasks on the work site. Furthermore, it is imperative to keep up with the daily tasks and reduce downtime since it can get costly for the business over time if these aspects are not addressed. It is therefore a win win to offer features and functionalities that aid operators in their daily work as well as helping them to keep safe. As we say at Volvo: "Safety comes first" and this is were Co-pilot has been a game changer very since it got launched.
The Users
The focus was on various sizes of contractors mainly targeting the operators to optimize their use of the machines for the work conducted. Moreover, the target group is also the machine technicians that makes use of built-in diagnostic functions to help them repair and maintain the machines.
My Role & The Work Process
My role was to support with UX and UI deliveries of the current features:
+ Support with the UX and UI design work focusing on the Hauler apps, making concepts and prototypes of the OBW (onboard weighing showing real-time insight into the payload for the hauler) and MAP (displays the whereabouts of machines, vehicles and visitors in real-time on site).
+ Support with the UX and UI design of Dig Assist with the In-Field functionality, were operators can create paths for e.g. trenching, foundations and driveway/pool preparation.
+ As a sole designer create the “action center” feature that would solve the issue of not having all important notifications and system adjustments easily accessed in the same area of the interface.
To do the tasks above, I used softwares such as illustrator, Photoshop (Adobe CC & Sketch for mac) to create the wireframes, workflow, digital assets (graphics) and other strategic documents.
Results
The Volvo Co-pilot system was created to offer real-time insights into the work done by operators in specific machines, aiding them as much as possible in their daily tasks. The focus on reducing the amount of interactions needed to perform a certain work task was an important aspect when creating this product. Furthermore, reducing mental overload by presenting consistent interaction patterns as well as sufficient amount of information presented to the operator in a given time.
